Yesy Gilels

Full time student, defender of the faith, campus adviser and community rock star discusses growth, time management and how she, like many biblical heroes went from skeptic to believer.

Her story begins at the University of Toronto, where she studied Equity Studies and Human Rights. The rights of many minority groups were discussed – excluding Jews, and matters came to a boiling point when students were encouraged to participate in current events related activities, such as Israel Apartheid week. “This was the first time I realized the curriculum encourages taking a side in a political conflict and that non-conformity might affect my grade”. After this experience, she became uneasy with the institutional bias but instead of being intimidated, something else resonated in her.
